Skills Quest is a cornerstone program of the United States Ski and Snowboard Associations (USSA) Alpine Training System (ATS) designed to motivate and reward athletes in working toward and improving abilities in the key areas of emphasis of the ATS. As its name implies, it represents a quest, or journey, toward success in ski racing, by focusing on skills, the critical components that make up a high performing ski racer. It includes activities and competencies for skiing skills, technique and tactics, conditioning, equipment preparation, performance psychology and racer management. Skills Quest runs on the AMP Skills platform that standardizes the talent identification and athlete development processes for sports organizations.
This past month AMP Sport debuted the newly developed AMP Skills Platform and the USSA Skills Quest scoring app, available in the iTunes store. The AMP Skills Platform utilized by USSA allows for the completion of USSA SkillsQuest competitions where athletes can compete head to head while having their skills evaluated.
Each USSA member athlete who participates in USSA SkillsQuest will be able to create an AMP SkillsQuest profile. The AMP profile follows the athlete through their athletic career beginning with their profile in the AMP Skills Platform and club profile in Club AMP then following them through to the regional level with USSA Club AMP, ending at the USSA AMP elite level. Giving USSA member the athletes the best chances for long-term athletic success.
AMP Sport is excited to play a pivotal role in sport development through the creation of a technological pipeline that runs from the grassroots to elite sporting levels.
After joining the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association as high performance director in 2007, Troy Flanagan found himself buried in data and frustrated. All of the organization’s training programs were in Excel spreadsheets. Coaches were still calculating the future performance of young skiers by hand. There had to be a better way.
“I look for pain, things that take a long time, and I just try to automate them,” Flanagan said.
That impulse and a brief meeting at a World Cup ski race with a USSA donor, Jim Chiasson, who owns his own software company, led to the creation of Amp Sport. The software system was designed by Chiasson’s designers, and it allows athletes to record everything from how much they sleep to how many sets they do in the weight room. The information is recorded in an app on their Sprint phones and shared instantly with coaches and the USSA’s high performance team. The system also assigns athletes a training regimen from 6,500 exercises, includes video that illustrates how to do various exercises and offers a social media tool to share strategies for skiing at coming competitions.
“Athlete management systems in the past have almost always failed because the technology wasn’t there,” Flanagan said. “But the time is right now to produce these analytic systems to enhance performance. Last year’s World Cup season was the first time I’d seen an amazing difference in the amount of data available to us. People were saying, ‘For the first time, I know what’s going on with every athlete.’”
The AMP Athlete app integrates wellness monitoring into AMP Sport, improving overall performance.
AMP Athlete offers wellness monitoring for teams currently using AMP Sport. AMP Athlete is a daily, 3-part questionnaire that keeps coaches apprised of their athletes’ overall well being. Used in conjunction with AMP Sport, AMP Athlete monitors and records an athlete’s wellness over time.
The AMP Athlete app gives players the ability to track their daily wellness and immediately alerts coaches about unusual statistics, illness and requests for contact. AMP Athlete tracks resting heart rate, soreness, sleep duration and quality, fatigue, mood state, stress and motivation. This information is synced with an athlete’s online profile and their wellness history is made available on an in-app calendar, and on the AMPSport website. AMP Athlete keeps coaches up to date on their athletes’ wellness and ultimately improves performance and reduces the possibility of injury or overtraining.
AMP Athlete is the second mobile offering from AMP Sport joining AMP Coach in the App Store. Both apps are free to organizations currently using the AMP Sport Platform. For more information on the AMP Athlete app, and AMPSport’s Wellness feature, visit our Wellness FAQ page.
